Description
The Nexus of Energy, Climate, and Water
In this game, players develop arguments, challenge others’ ideas, and try to persuade a judge that they have the best argument. The cards provide easy-to-read facts for any level player to construct an argument around one of the nexus topics. Challenge and Persuade is a fun and social card game that challenges players to think about the choices we have in balancing our need for water and energy with the challenge of minimizing climate change.

Challenge and Persuade engages students into thinking about the dynamics of their environment as it pertains to energy and water – but also hones their speaking and debating skills. While this games is great for students already engaged with sustainability initiatives, students who are less environmentally inclined find it a bit challenging. Some would have preferred to have a list on the Persuade cards as to which Challenges it might match up with best. And judges found it difficult to determine a “winner” because they found all the arguments to be persuasive and convincing. However, there’s no doubt the game provoked a lot of interesting dialogue and created a basis for starting conversations about the climate that went beyond the arguments detailed on the cards.
I would highly recommend the NEXUS games to formal and informal educators alike. If I had one small “complaint” about the game, it would be to design a stronger container. After just a few rounds of use, the boxes are already showing signs of wear and tear! Otherwise, I sincerely hope plans are in the works for creating a 2.0 version that builds on the excellent foundation this activity provides.
